From what I gather now,
Santa Rosa has lost a little bit of it’s luster since they city began to
heavily enforce the pads rule once again. What brought about this turn of
events, I am not clear on? It’s a shame really. Maybe I happened to be
there during its moment of glory, when a few cops were cool and pads were
only enforced by oneself.
This is truly the North Coast’s O.G. skate park, built by Wormhoudt Design
before there was such a thing as a skate park boom. SR consists of three
bowl sections; from the kiddie bowl to the deeper 6-foot eastside section,
and all are connected by a series of snake runs. The park pays homage to
the 1970s with its design for sure. Along the outer perimeter is a little
bump, nice rail, pyramid-style fun box with a four-stair set and a long
windy curb. There is a definite flow to this park, from east to west,
since there is a very mild down sloping affect.
Santa Rosa was the first park I ever visited, and the trip was a spur of
the moment thing. Ever since, I’ve made the pilgrimage to come skate this
concrete playground countless times. The park itself is really fun, and
the lines are endless if you open your mind. I used to spend all day
there. I’ve done some bodily harm there and have always come home tired
and satisfied.
The vibe was half the reason I loved skating the park. Attitude-wise, it
was a pure laid-back North Coast groove. The unofficial motto was that it
didn’t matter how good or bad you were, just as long as you were having
fun, then it was all good. Occasionally local heroes like Tony Trujillo
would stop by with his crew and hang for a bit. Other times, traveling
pros would stop by for a session. Everyone was cool with each other. What
was funny was just about every time I would go to SR, I’d wind up running
into people I haven’t seen in ages, and all still skateboarding. The place
just drew people in.
I haven’t been to Santa Rosa in close to a year. The last time I was
there, I blew out my ankle pretty bad and decided to take a bit of a break
from the park. Now I’ve heard the city is feeling a bit Nazi about the
pads rule. I don’t know how much that has changed the vibe of the place.
And with Novato and Healdsburg not too far away, and Windsor almost
finished, Santa Rosa’s O.G. skate park just might be placed on the back
burner.
Or is it?
It’s worth a stop.
I still like the place.
