Q: Where were you born and
raised?
A: I was born and raised in San
Jose in 1964, but I spent most of my time in Campbell when
Winchester skate park and Campbell skate park opened up a mile
from each other, we also had another cement skate park in
Milpitas at the time, but I was too young to drive to make it
out there. At least I could take the bus everyday after school
to the skate parks in Campbell.
Q: Where do you currently reside?
A: I reside in Campbell, I use to live in
Scotts valley for 3 years, but my ex-wife didn't like it up
there after awhile... To lonely and far away from friends and
family which were based in San Jose. I really liked it up there,
it was very beautiful and peaceful, plus I was like 15min. From
Santa Cruz... The beach!
Q: Current Sponsors?
A: Powell Skateboards, Vans Shoes,
Sessions Clothing, Fox Skate Pads, Dragon Optics, Protec
Helmets, Vestal Watches, Autobahn Wheels, Krux Trucks, Skatewave
Skate Parks, Bones Swiss Bearings, RDS Skateshop, Skaterade
Beverage Company and Randoms Hardware.
Q: How old were you when you turned
pro?
A: I turned Pro in 1980 at the Gold Cup
series in Southern California at the Oasis skatepark contest...
I was 15 years old and I had been sponsored by Powell since 1978
as an amateur for them and won all the competitions I entered,
so I was ready at that time for sure.
Q: Who were some of the skaters you
looked up to when you first started skating?
A: I looked up to Ty Page, Howard hood,
Lonnie Hiramoto, Stacy Peralta, Tony Alva... Guys like that from
the early 70's.
Q: How come you have stuck with Powell
for your whole pro career and haven't started your own board
company?
A: I've stayed with Powell all these years
because I enjoy being a professional skateboarder who still gets
to travel the world skating and having fun. I never wanted to
get into the business to early because then I would have to put
the skateboard away and become a full on business man with a 9
to 5 job and I wasn't into that, I'm still not, I love the
freedom I have being a skateboarder:)
Q: From all the years you have been in
skateboarding what would you say was the most memorable for you?
And Why?
A: The most memorable time has to be when
I first got on Powell Peralta back in 1978 and I got to travel
down to southern California every weekend to skate a new
skatepark down there that I only read about in the magazines
back in the day, now I got to ride them and meet all these pros
I looked up to from Stacy bringing me around all the time all
over the place.
Q: The Raging waters Ramp in San Jose,
Do you miss it?
A: Yea... I miss that whole scene back in
1987, it was awesome. The ramp was super fun and it was cool
that we could just show up and skate when ever we wanted to and
we also got to go on the waterslides everyday all day long, plus
they gave us food vouchers to eat there as well. We were the
entertainment for the people waiting in line for the slides, so
we were basically employees there.
Q: Do you still keep contact with the
original Bones Brigade? (Tony, Lance, Tommy and Mike)
A: The only one I really ever have kept in
contact with all the time is Lance Mountain, we were and still
are really good friends Lance and I. Tony & I talk to on
occasion because of the video game and being associated with his
Boom Boom Huck Jam Tours. McGill, I've skated with a few times
recently at the Soul Bowl events down in Hermosa Beach and I
just saw Tommy G at an Art Auction event in the city at a club
that was sponsored by Skaterade last weekend.
Q: Animal Chin and the search for him.
Who came up with that whole thing?
A: The Idea was a collaboration of the
whole team where we wanted to film skating, but the story line
was written by Stacy and a friend of his. It was a lot of adlib
stuff in the film, but we had an idea of what the story line was
about, it was the best time for the team because that's when we
spent the most time together at one time and that's when we
became the closest to each other and NO... We never gay off with
each other like big brother always wanted to know, we like and
still do love the opposite sex:)
Q: How many Pro Model boards have you
had with Powell since the beginning?
(Different Graphics)
A: I have had about close to 50 pro decks
with Powell. My first dragon on the bearing O.G. Graphic lasted
for over 6 years till we finally changed it to something else,
we only changed the shape of the deck over the years, which was
pretty cool and I'm stoked the image lasted so long as my icon
in skateboarding.
Q: Does it amaze you to see the
original Cab boards going for well into the thousands on E-bay?
A: Yes, I does amaze me that they are
going for such high prices and it's a nice compliment that
people are that stoked on my memorabilia.. It's an honor for me
and I'm fortunate to have such loyal fans like that, so it
definitely reassures me that I've done a good thing for our
sport and have brought much happiness to other in our industry.
Q: You bring your daughter Kayla to the
skatepark with you a lot, do you encourage her to go or does she
insist on going?
A: I encourage her more to come to the
park, rather than her insisting. I don't think she enjoys
skating as much as I would like her to:( She would rather play
with her stuffed animals or go dirt bike riding instead, but
that's cool with me because I love riding Motocross with her.
Q: What is the status on The Faction?
A: The Faction is on a Long break for
awhile, when the buzz comes around again where people really
want to see us play, then we'll get a show or two together, but
as for now we are not practicing or playing anymore. We did just
release a new limited Faction skateboard with the company
Outlookskates, it came out awesome, it's the Faction bat logo.
Q: Favorite Skateboarding Video Part(s)?
(Of all time)
A: All the Powell Peralta videos from back
in the day.
Q: Favorite Website(s)?
A: It will be done in a few months...
stevecaballero.com... plus ebay.com and Racerxill.com,
megomuseum.com and skateone.com
Q: Favorite snack?
A: popcorn, sunflower seeds, corn nuts or
beef jerky.
Q: Favorite place you have traveled to
skateboard?
A: Japan and Australia
Q: You collect various toys etc. What
would be the coolest toy you have bought recently?
A: A Bathing Ape 12" doll of the artist
NIGO from Japan. I'm really into underground/ Urban art and
toys, it's a small scene that hasn't hit the mainstream yet, so
I think it's really cool:)
Q: What has kept you in San Jose all
these years? How come you haven't moved to so-cal like so many
other do?
A: Because San Jose rules and it's my
home, I love it here, it has all that I need to keep me happy,
loved, motivated and challenged. The weather here is pretty nice
and the scenery is very beautiful compared to most places.
Q: Do you ever see yourself not
skating?
A: Every other day, I see myself on a
dirtbike on those days:) as for quitting our sport, not yet...
Having too much fun at the moment with skating plus there's to
much to learn.
Q: What do you spend most of your time
doing these days?
A: I spend most of my time skating, riding
MX, selling stuff on Ebay, traveling, taking care of my
daughter, drawing and painting, writing new music on my home
studio, spending time with my girlfriend Krissie and out new
Boxer pup... Sam:)
Q: Well CAB it has been an honor to be
able to interview you I definitely looked up to you as I first
began to skateboard as so many others did also. So for the last
question who would you like to thank or say what up to?
A: I'd like to thank everyone who has
believed in my friendship and who has helped me out in anyway, I
love all my friends and my family that has supported me since
the beginning, plus thanks to all my sponsors as well that have
been so supportive over the years. Thanks to you as well for
letting me express my views on your website... That rules!
