As a musical force, Rancid has stood the test
of time. Throughout their twelve years as brothers in life and in the
band, Rancid has created a revolutionary community as well as
revolutionary music. It’s only fitting that Armstrong name-checks his
dear departed labelmate Joe Strummer in the title track of their latest
release, Indestructible, due out August 26th on Hellcat Records.
It’s hard to imagine a record made in this day and age that so honors and
respects his memory and legacy. As Rancid approaches the 10-year
anniversary of the release of their first album, it is a testament to the
power and relevance of the band that Indestructible manages to
sound both revolutionary and unmistakably Rancid. Throughout the epic
collection of 19 songs, Indestructible manages to resurrect the
familiar punk and hardcore anthems, tried and true tinges of ska, and the
requisite unforeseen musical excursions that mark every Rancid record. At
a juncture in music where virtually every genre has been co-opted,
cross-pollinated or over-produced to death, Indestructible serves
as a much needed return to music of strength and community.
