New Orleans-based
progressive funk outfit Galactic will be hitting the road in the fall to
support the release of their first studio album in three years. Called
Ruckus (Sanctuary Records), the record was produced by Dan “The
Automator” Nakamura (Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School) and will be
released on October 7. It is far and away the band’s most powerful
recorded statement to date. The nationwide tour, entitled “The Ruckus
Tour,” will be hitting many major markets, and will include a massive set
of Halloween weekend shows beginning in Austin, TX, on the Friday,
followed by two shows in New Orleans on Saturday on Sunday, November 1 and
2.
Since the release of its last full-length, 2002’s We Love 'Em Tonight:
Live at Tipitina’s, Galactic’s interest in hip-hop and electronic
music flourished as they shared the stage with like-minded artists
including The Roots, Lyrics Born, and Pharcyde. Recent touring also saw
Galactic choosing groundbreaking openers such as Kid Koala, the Triple
Threat crew and DJ Z-Trip, as well as inviting graffiti artists SKW and
Doze to create original murals during the band’s sets.
Galactic wanted Ruckus to have a broader sonic palette, but that
was only one area on which they wanted to focus. “The main goal was to
concentrate on songwriting more than we ever had before, utilizing as many
different techniques as possible,” emphasizes drummer Stanton Moore. “So
we wrote the old-fashioned way, coming up with verses and choruses,
fine-tuning lyrical content.” Yet they also integrated new techniques,
improvising over loops and found sounds, and refining experiments
individual members had been making with samplers and sequencers during
off-stage hours.
